Fake Gimmicks over Israeli attack on Iran



Humanity once again confronts the NATO threat of extended world war in order to maintain the exploitative capitalist system.
Imperialism and colonialism survive and thrive on lies their media spread with long terms goals in perspective. As a result, the gap between observed reality and US/NATO official rhetoric was wider than the ocean.



Sabotages abroad, including in Soviet Union, declarations of missions “accomplished” followed by denials have been the hallmark of US policy even during the World war-II as well as so-called Cold war. It is now a clear-cut Indo-British case of sour grapes, having been beaten down in their own tricks.



India and UK decided to fix two test series, using the ICC, to take place almost simultaneously and parallel. One series is between Australia and India, and, second between Pakistan and England.



UK and India are the secret partners conspiring, under aegis of ICC, against badly shaken Pakistani players operating against Pakistan, removing their best bowlers, and they expected Pakistan and Australia crumbling while India and UK emerging awfully victorious.



Both UK and India would celebrate their victories while Australia and Pakistan were expected to wee all days and nights.



However, the those who dig the pits for opponents have fallen into it all by themsleves.



Australia thrashed an innocent looking India to 4-0 while Pakistani bowlers just crushed the British boys to thirst. All terror goods, including semi explosives and wild crackers stored in many places, including the supporters of the ruling Congress party guys, have remained unused. There is peace on streets of India.



India case is extremely peculiar. India fixed the series with both UK earlier and now with Australia keeping in view the Republic day on Jan 26 when India’s only cricketer and a major Hindu god with of worshipers and disciples and supporters, Sacuin Tendulkar, who made merry when the bowlers offered big runs, was expected to get the pot of Pharatratna.

Azadi or freedom is the talk of Kashmir now and for years now. The recent "stone-pelting" violence in Kashmir region of Jammu Kashmir now on the Indian side of the border, in which more than 100 innocent people were killed by Indian military forces confronting stone-pelters who used stones as their only weapons to counter the latest Indo-foreign arms, led once again to an open call for freedom by Kashmiris and formed the background for a meeting of pro-Kashmir- freedom sympathizers in Delhi in October entitled Freedom. Former JK chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad did not participate for fear of Congress wrath but BJP and probably former JK CM & NC patron Farooq seemed to have incited trouble at the venue through the central government.



Freedom for many means that Kashmir would be independent of both India and Pakistan and also Kashmir would be free of Indian rule, and would encompass all the territory of Jammu and Kashmir on both sides of the border. The situation in Pakistani part of Kashmir, Azad Jammu Kashmir, too, there is a conflict between the struggle for independence from Pakistan and the efforts of elements in the Pakistani state to outlaw political parties who stand for independence. They attempt to use Kashmiris for their own ends are equally culpable of escalating the violence and denying Kashmiris their democratic rights.



This offers a clear picture about what has been happening in the name of so-called composite dialogues between India and Pakistan for years. Now the status of dialogues is decomposed one. The Indian made draconian legislation such as the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act; Jammu and Kashmir Public Safety Act; and Disturbed Areas Act; which extend immunity to the security forces for human rights violations, have predictably resulted in horrific crimes against civilians. Unless they are repealed and the security forces made accountable and punished for such crimes, the conflict will continue.

Kashmiri American Council (KAC) has reiterated the unflinching right of Kashmiris to sovereignty for self governance and Kashmir is living proof that it is not going to compromise, far less abandon, its demand for Azaadi (freedom) which is its birthright and for which it has paid a price in blood and suffering which has not been exacted from any other people of the South Asian subcontinent. The UN the international community must debate the gross human rights atrocities committed by 700,000 Indian military and paramilitary forces in Kashmir.

The heavy militarization of Kashmir, once known as paradise, has induced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, unlawful detentions, torture, phenomenon of half-widows, orphans, displacement, migrations, and mass graves; KAC has proposed some important steps towards normalization of situation in JK. A special envoy on Kashmir; Immediate and complete cessation of military and paramilitary actions; gradual withdrawal of the military presence from the towns and villages; dismantling of bunkers, watch towers and barricades – akin to ones in Palestine set up by Zionist criminal regime- are a few of them.

Considering the latest pro-India gimmicks by Pakistan on cricket ground, one doubts if India and Pakistan alone can solve the 64-year-old Kashmir conflict. The Kashmir conflict is not about autonomy, nor is it about converting the ‘Ceasefire Line’ into an international border. It is about honoring the political and human rights of the people of Jammu & Kashmir in accord with international law, international treaties, international covenants, justice and morality. India and Pakistan must negotiate a treaty to create a nuclear weapons-free zone in all of Jammu and Kashmir because Kashmir being the only country in the world that share borders with three nuclear powers – India, Pakistan & China.

One gets the impression that Kashmir has more Indians and their agents than Kashmiris themselves. Even if the impression is not apt or realistic, the crude fact remains that Jk is one of highly militarized zones in the world. This explosive military situation of JK is the cause of all tensions and genocides, resulting in reduction of Muslims and increase in Hindus in JK. According to the Jammu Kashmir government now under Indian occupation, barring two, all the other 102 people who have been killed during the nine months of turmoil in the Valley beginning June last year seeking freedom from India were innocent and had nothing to do with the violence or its instigation thereof.



Cowardice is enemy of peace. Though it is guilty of occupation of and genocides in Jammu Kashmir, India has never openly admitted it nor India promised it would not surrender sovereignty back to Kashmiris nor did it make any gestures towards that. But on the contrary all its terror operations and fake encounters show it still is bent upon killing the remaining Kashmiris as well, eating the dead flesh and drinking their hotblood….

The unshakable strength of cultural and emotional links between Kashmiris and Pakistanis has been yet again demonstrated in occupied Kashmir when India and Pakistan played a pre-fixed cricket match in India recently.

During the recent Cricket world cup semi final, fixed jointly by the ICC-India and India military intelligence guys, the Kashmiris’ passionate love for Pakistan was witnessed when many people in Jammu Kashmir fainted after Pakistan lost Cricket World Cup semi final against India. The losing of semi final by Pakistan against India proved to be too shocking for many people in the valley. The doctors had earlier advised heart and diabetic patients to avoid watching the high-octane match. Some of the patients were rushed to Soura Institute of Medical Sciences for fainting attacks. The doctors have again cautioned people against the health risks of such cricket frenzy in future.

India should improve the ground situation in occupied JK before initiating talks to resolve the Kashmir dispute.

Cricket cannot be played in a genuine manner, at least beyond national level. India and ICC think without proper pre-fixings, cricket is not interesting at all. The cricwar, as speculated, ended in India's full favor.

Ind-Pak cricket diplomacy,thus, was successful thanks only to Pakistan's pro-India gestures, Gilani boys bowling for Indian interests. playing. OK , let that be. Are the freedom fighters, then, struggle only get themselves killed by occupation terrorists from India in a sustained manner? They must consider some of inherent weaknesses in their just struggle for sovereignty.



There as many freedom groups as there are Muslim leaders in Jammu Kashmir and all of them are supposedly fighting for freedom from Indian brutalities, its continued yoke, killing thousands of innocent people. Possibly these freedom organizations think speaking the made through many voices could be audible in New Delhi and even could force the Hindu terror bosses to consider freeing Jammu Kashmir from its constitution made with entering illegal accounts.


Perhaps thee freedom groups would like to come together to form a unified struggle forum to purse their goals more vigorously and purposefully, but it seems both India and Pakistan have denied them the necessary permission to wage a joint struggle that would look like a serious sovereignty effort by the defenseless Kashmiris. In effect India and Pakistan control the psyche of majority of Kashmiris who get killed by the post-paid Indian terrorists.



True, on its part, Pakistan is fully committed to a just and peaceful resolution of the Kashmir dispute in accordance with the UN Security Council resolutions and, most importantly, the aspirations of the Kashmiri people. All Kashmiris, like all other freedom loving nations, acknowledge the great importance of a peaceful solution to the Jammu Kashmir dispute and also commend the commitment of Pakistan to the peace process and hope that occupying India through brute force would also show the same attitude in order to give the peace process a significant and positive push forward.


Over 700, 000 (seven hundred thousand) paid Indian armed terror forces present in the territory, pouncing on the defenseless Kashmiris on fake encounters, and the media reporting this ugly fascism as Indian military achievement for special awards and lacs of innocent Kashmiris have been killed since 1947. Many secret graveyards are still kept secret treasures of Indian democracy.


UN long ago asked India to perform a plebiscite on Jammu Kashmir to determine the fate of this terrorized nation. But India has for years skillfully prolonged and in fact denied that mainly because they know India would lose and Kashmiri would get back heir sovereignty. Not even the pro-India elements would support Indian case in ballot exercise.




Indian violation of human rights in Kashmir is lawful. The BJP party launched its yatra Jan 12 in Kolkata with an objective of unfurling the Congress-national flag at Lal Chowk in Srinagar on the Republic Day. Jammu Kashmir government denied permission to BJP to ignite violence in already tensed nation. JK Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also had spoken against the BJP's plan and ordered the state machinery to do everything to stop the yatra and foil the BJP move. Omar Abdullah had invited the BJP leaders to attend the Republic Day celebrations at Jammu or Srinagar. But they turned down the offer, saying it was a self-contradiction. They want to hoist the flag not for peace but for inciting violence so that Indian paid state terrorists could unleash terror operations in JK murdering Muslims at will.




The Jammu and Kashmir puppet government quickly withdrew all the cases against the Hindu extremists wanting to destabilize Kashmir by violating prohibitory orders in Kathua to facilitate their release. BJP said the central government and the ministries of home and railways were guilty of ' the crime of hijacking' by diverting the trains carrying the BJP workers on their way to join the 'Ekta Yatra' to fuel the crisis in occupied JK. Arun Jaitley, along with Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Sawraj and Ananth Kumar, was detained at Jammu airport Monday and taken to Madhopur in Punjab. They again marched to Jammu and Kashmir with hundreds of the party workers carrying the flags. They were arrested and released from the hotel in Kathua, 85 km south of Jammu, where they were lodged. The leaders alleged they were denied even their basic facilities of toilet and drinking water for more than two hours at the Jammu airport.



Hence, the Kashmiris should not now have any fake hopes on “plebiscite” mainly because India is now a member of the notorious UNSC that has cleared the NATO terror attack on sovereign Libya and the USA-UK terror twins are solidly behind India, a regional state terrorist. Indian armed forces, in their fresh act of state terrorism, martyred one innocent Kashmiri youth in Kellar area of Shopian during a siege and search operation. The Indian authorities also booked six illegally detained civilians under the draconian law, Public Safety Act.



India can kill any Muslim anywhere in the subcontinent and in Kashmir. Speaking in New Delhi at the session 'Kashmir - What next?' on India Today Conclave, the Chairman of All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) and the President of Jammu & Kashmir Tahreek e Hurriyat, Geelani had demanded holding of plebiscite in occupied Jammu Kashmir to give the people an opportunity to decide their future themselves.



Geelani said that the Kashmir dispute was all about broken promises by India and pointed out that miseries were piled on Kashmiri people and appealed to the people of India to heed the sufferings of the Kashmiris. The All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) in a statement in Srinagar condemning the invoking of the black law against the civilians termed it as frustration of the authorities.


A delegation of the Amnesty International is visiting occupied Kashmir to launch a report titled ‘Lawless law’. The report would be made public in a press conference at a hotel in Srinagar on March 21. The report documents how administrative detention in the occupied territory is being used to detain people for years without trial, depriving them of basic human rights. The report also documents how authorities are using the black law, Public Safety Act to secure the long-term detention of political activists and a range of other individuals against whom there is insufficient evidence for a trial or conviction to keep them out of circulation.



It was on Oct. 27, 1947, two months after the end of British occupation of South Asia that Indian forces entered a free sovereign Jammu Kashmir and they have since been violating all established principles of law, justice, morality and politics. Slaughtering of Kashmiris has become the right of Indian paid “solders”. While stressing the significance of commemorating the Kashmir Black Day every year on Oct. 27, Kashmiris living abroad are now trying to explore, through the OIC offices in New York and Geneva, the Human Rights Council, international human rights groups and humanitarian organizations to prevent further violations of the human rights of the Kashmiri people and work toward helping them realize their right to self-determination.



The passive disposition of Islamic world towards the brutalities unleashed on defenses Muslims the world over is the prime issue of serious concern. Arab world does seem as much interested in Palestine issue as the Zionists are on illegal settlement proliferation with US backing; Now bulk of Arab leaders are behind anti-Islamic western terrocracies in terror attacking sovereign Libya. However, the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) believes that the people of Jammu Kashmir, after so many years of suffering, deserve full respect for their legitimate right to self-determination, freedom for peaceful existence and prosperity. The OIC is examining all existing possibilities and authorities to help people gain their rights. In October the OIC asserted that the permanent inclusion of the Jammu Kashmir issue on the agenda of OIC’s summits and ministerial sessions is a clear indication of the Islamic organization’s strong support and continuous solidarity with its people.



In stead of harping on "Plebiscite", for the sake of formality, the Kashmiris must focus on regaining sovereignty from an unwilling, arrogant India, now courted by USA-UK terror twins. The Plebiscite Kashmiris demand India would never like to take not only for fear of defeat, but more than that, a defeat would be a permanent self-defeat for Indian foreign policy and diplomacy. All these years India deliberately has been lying on the status of JK and killed over millions of Muslims , apart from provoking wars, killing thousands. Pressing for Plebiscite would mean directly hurting the paid wounded soldier!


Crux of issue is that the notorious knotty UNSC and ICJ & ICC are dead sleep over the pathetic terrorized existence Kashmiris and has not asked the NATO to impose a noflyzone over Kashmir or India and attack New Delhi, as they have quickly done it on sovereign Libya. India is now a part of the same composite terror agency called UNSC.


Today, India's main strength is that the anti-Islamic western powers as well as UNSC are not opposing a terror bed fellow India which supports them for terror attacking Muslim nations, now a sovereign Libya, by abstaining from voting on obvious payment basis!

India, essentially Hindutva, no matter who rules, cannot digest any defeat at the hands of Muslims, whether foreign or local. CIA, the key instrument of subversive operations abroad and looting foreign resources, has clearly disowned the Sept -11 strategy of attacking US targets and crossed over to UNSC gimmicks to enable NATO to invade Mideast nations for energy. In the name of "rebels" the Western dictators are attacking the Libyan sovereignty. These NATO-CIA alliances have only used the anti-Qaddafi drunkards to want freedom etc only to invade and occupy Libya and then control oil resources.





Western terrocracies in democracy uniforms, in the name of democracy, freedom and the bull, are murdering innocent Muslims in Muslim nations. With 100,000 US troops carrying out a war to suppress the resistance of the Afghan people to foreign occupation, an escalating air war in neighboring Pakistan and another 50,000 troops still occupying Iraq, the Obama administration is anxious to camouflage the reality that US imperialism is carrying out yet another war against sovereign Libya a Muslim country in Mideast-Africa. Obama the politician is also concerned about inevitable popular opposition within the US itself, where recent polls indicate that two-thirds believe that all terror wars on Islam in Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan or Libya or Iran are fake and not worth fighting.





While the European colonialist states and imperialist USA are defending the unity of their anti-humanity blocks like the USA, UK and EU, they are trying to divide the Muslim nations and NATO has shamelessly taken it their birth right to invade sovereign Libya and divide the Libya since Col. Moammar Qaddafi is growing stronger now and let the eastern Libyan rebel drunkards have the oil rich zone so that the Western powers can have easy access to energy resources of President Qaddafi’s Libya.



Soon after the successful insurgency in Tunisia, the CIA & Co went ahead with further pursuing their hidden energy agenda in Egypt to install a US agent and a former UN employ by name Md. AlBarradai, however the plot failed, though Mubarak was forced to quit Presidency and the nation stays destabilized without any credible Islamic governance to which the Western imperialist object . In Libya, CIA and western terrocracies have could fool the people and Libya has remained sovereign nation under Col. Qaddafi. But the NATO terrorists are killing innocent civilians to show their frustration in terror action.





In hunting for Arab resources, Obama led NATO fascists are in fact pursuing their own strategic interests in waging an imperialist war against Mideastern Libya, a former colonial country. Obama led NATO terror forces have shamelessly infiltrated into Libya and launched coalition air raids in Tripoli at midnight killing innocent Libyans. CIA has crated a Hollywood fashioned battlefield in sovereign Libya. All Obama efforts to woo the sovereign Libyan forces to support the foreign invaders on extra payment basis have failed. Patriotic Libyan forces are still trying to recapture Misrata, the last major western Libyan town in rebel hands, while illegal NATO terror invaders claim they have seized control of the frontline oil town of Ajdabiya from Libyan forces.





Since Obama seeks the support of all NATO terror syndicate members, he has very cleverly passed the terror drama to NATO cover just as a formality while CIA-Pentagon would still lead the terror plunders. It is only a CIA tactic to fool the foolish Arab world. The Obama regime is formally shifting its illegal war in sovereign Libya to NATO terror syndicate led again by USA-UK terror twins as the US-dominated alliance wants to prolong the fighting for a couple months, meanwhile trying to court the Arab states to support them and also to provoke some kind of coup within the existing Tripoli government itself. CIA has enough experience in subversive diplomatic terror operations.





Obama is trying his level best to bring into the terror squad an unwilling and opposing Turkey as well. Turkey has its own extensive business interests in Libya and elsewhere in the region and has no intention of ceding them to France. It may have offered several warships to enforce the blockade of Libya’s coast, but has insisted that it will not participate in any armed action against the Libyan people. Turkey accused the French government of seeking to assert its own leadership of the intervention to further its own aims of laying claim to Libya’s oil resources. Turkish leaders have publicly criticized France for ‘turning the operation into a show of force’ and questioned French motives in the operation. Paris has started to be sidelined.







The notorious UNSC Resolution 1973 pushed through by Washington on March 17 by bribing the established anti-Islamic nations like Russia, China, Brazil and India, and imposed a no-fly zone over Libya which in effect has become a full scale terror war on sovereign Libya, while allowing “all necessary measures”, ostensibly to protect civilians. It specifically ruled out “a foreign occupation force of any form on any part of Libyan territory.” But USA with its veto handle is not at sacred of UNSC at all.





In Mideast the unilateral USA seems to be conducting some sort of rehearsal for the WW-III and is trying to test the effectiveness of its terror bases across the world in war situations, keeping in view over all emerging scenario during the WW-III. After all both the World wars were the result of the US-UK conspiracies. In contrast to other previous or ongoing wars of USA, Washington’s motives for presenting the war against Libya as being led by NATO and supported by some mischievous and foolish Arab countries are now known.



The US and NATO warplanes have been used overwhelmingly in recent days to attack ground forces and civilians of Libya and to destroy the country’s infrastructure. This was very similar to earlier US terror attack on Baghdad.



As the American vultures eye on Libyan dead bodies and the imperialist on oils resources, the aim of this campaign is to provide sufficient fire power from the air to allow an offensive by the so-called “rebels” based in Benghazi with the aim of toppling Col. Qaddafi and installing a puppet regime more pliant to Western governments and the major Western oil companies. In fact now the Obama forces have taken over from the CIA "rebels" and are doing the terror task, targeting installations and human beings .





In fact the NATO terror syndicate is trapping the “rebels” as well since these drunkards are used as tools to destabilize Libya. Col. Qaddafi son Khamis has been the target of the NATO for revealing the anti-democratic bribery practices in the West involving all western top leaders during the top polls, including the Frenche president Jew Zarkozy. France, which jumped the gun on the military intervention, launching the first air strikes, reportedly without coordinating them with its erstwhile allies, had earlier insisted that the intervention should be directed by an ad-hoc body independent from NATO, ostensibly because of the negligible Arab participation. The American criminal rogues say Col. Muammar Gaddafi is not in their hit list. Obama and Cameron are busy in developing a plan for a ground operation on Libyan territory to kill more and more civilians.

In order to create the necessary Hollywood tensions, the NATO terrorists have pounced on civilians in Libya whose security they claim to protect. The civilian death toll from the US-NATO bombing and missile strikes has risen to around 100. In Tripoli, hospital workers and the latest attacks on the Libyan capital had killed a number of civilians, including women.

In this synopsis we shall discuss two verses that have received much “air time” in the post 9/11 media environment.1

The first verse appears in chapter 5, verse 51 of the Quran and says, according to the most common English translations,


O, you who believe [in the message of Muhammad], do not take Jews and Christians as awliya’. They are awliya’ to one another, and the one among you who turns to them is of them.

Truly, God does not guide wrongdoing folk.


The word awliya’ (sing. “wali”), which we left above in the original Arabic, has been commonly translated into English as “friends.” Given this translation, the verse appears to be a very clear statement opposing “normative” or “kindly relations” between Muslims and Jews and Christians, however, when we look at the traditional Quranic commentaries of Medieval times, which discuss the events surrounding the revelation of this verse, the modern translation becomes suspect.


Put within its proper historical context, the word awliya’ here does not mean “friends” at all. While it is true that one of the meanings of awliya’ is “friends,” it also has additional meanings such as “guardians,” “protectors” and even “legal guardians.” Interestingly enough, we find that when we consult the traditional commentaries on the Quran we are told that this verse was revealed at a particularly delicate moment in the life of the early Muslim community, and here it is necessary to explain, to a certain extent, what was the existential situation of the Muslims at this time in Arabia so as to situate verse 5:51 within its proper circumstances.


Before 5:51 was revealed, the Prophet of Islam and the Muslims had only recently migrated as a community from Makkah to Medina, some 400 km to the north. They had done so, according to Islamic histories, due to the persecution to which they were subjected at the hands of their fellow tribesmen and relatives in Makkah. Most Makkans worshipped various idols as “gods” and feared the rise of interest in the message of Muhammad within the city, even though Muhammad was himself a son of Makkah. The

Makkans feared the growing presence of the Muslims because the Muslims claimed that there was only one true God, who had no physical image, and who required of men: virtue, generosity and fair and kind treatment of the weaker members of society. This simple message, in fact, threatened to overturn the social order of Makkah, based as it was upon the worship of multiple gods and the privilege of the strong and the wealthy. It also threatened to disrupt the economic benefits of this privilege, the annual pilgrimage season when people from all over the Arabian peninsula would come to worship the many idols/gods at the Ka`bah—a cubical structure which the Quran claims was originally built by Abraham and his son, Ishmael, as a temple to the one God, before the decadence of religion in Arabia.2


The message of Islam threatened to replace the social and economic system of Makkan polytheism, with the worship of the one God, Who—as in the stories of the Old Testament—would not allow that others be worshipped alongside Him. In this difficult environment the Prophet of Islam preached peacefully his message of monotheism and virtue, but he and his small band of followers were eventually driven from the city by torture, threats of assassination and various other forms of humiliation and abuse. The Muslims then migrated to the city of Medina where the Prophet had been invited to come and live in safety with his followers and where the main Arab tribes of the city had willingly accepted his message.


According to the commentary tradition in Islam, it was not long after this migration to Medina that verse 5:51 was revealed. Specifically, we are told that this verse came down around the time of the battle of Badr (2 A.H. / 623 A.D.) or perhaps after the battle of Uhud (3 A.H. / 625 A.D.). In these early days, even though the Muslim community constituted no more than perhaps a few hundred people and had already left the city of Makkah, yet the Makkans continued to confront them militarily, and these two early battles, as well as others, were crucial events in the history of the early Islamic community.


Militarily, the Makkans were a far more powerful force than the Muslims, and in addition, the Makkans had allies throughout Arabia. Given the small numbers of the Muslims, the Prophet and his fledgling community faced the real possibility of utter annihilation should they lose any of these early conflicts. Within this highly charged environment some members of the Muslim community wanted to make individual alliances with other non-Muslim tribes in the region. Within the city of Medina there were Jewish tribes who constituted a powerful presence in the town and who were on good terms with the Makkans, and to the north of the city there were also numerous Christian Arab tribes. Some Muslims saw the possibility of taking alliances with one or more of these groups as a way of guaranteeing their own survival should the Makkan armies ultimately triumph. This was the stark reality of Arabia at that time, that it was only through the protection of one’s tribe or one’s alliances with other tribes or clans that one’s own individual security was insured.


From the perspective of Islam, however, the Prophet realized that a young community, faced with great peril, could not allow such “dissension” in the ranks of the faithful as would be created by various individuals taking bonds of loyalty with other groups not committed to the Islamic message. Indeed, from the Islamic point of view such actions, had they been allowed, would have been a kind of communal suicide that would have seriously undermined Muslim unity, broken the morale of the community and perhaps caused the many individuals taking such alliances to lack fortitude in the face of the clear and present danger of the Makkan armies and their allies.


Keeping all these historical issues in mind, it becomes obvious that the translation of awliya’ as “friends” is wrong and that it should be rendered as “protectors” or “guardians” in the strict military sense of these terms. The verse should be read as, “Do not take Christians and Jews as your protectors. They are protectors to one another....” This is the message of the verse, and the appropriateness of this understanding is supported not only by the historical context for its revelation but also by the fact that nowhere does the Quran oppose simple kindness between peoples, as is clear from other Quranic verses such as,


God does not forbid that you should deal kindly and justly with those who do not fight you for the sake of [your] religion or drive you out of your homes. Truly, God loves those

who are just. [60:8]

and

The good deed and the evil deed are not equal. Repel [the evil deed] with one that is better. Then truly the one, between you and he is enmity, shall become as a bosom friend. [41:34]




Another verse which has caused much confusion is 9:5. This is the first Quranic verse mentioned in the fatwa of Usama bin Ladin. It is also a verse which has been referred to by Reverend Franklin Graham in his comments about the “wicked, violent” nature of Islam. Verse 9:5 says,


But when the forbidden months are past, then fight and slay the polytheists (mushrikun) wherever you find them, seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every strategem [of war].


Contrary to what may be thought from a literal reading of this translation, this verse is not a kind of carte blanche to attack any and all non-Muslim peoples. Here again the issue of historical context is so crucial for understanding.


Verse 9:5 was revealed specifically in relation to the Muslims fighting the idolaters of Makkah. The Makkan idolaters are referred to in the Quran by the technical term “mushrikun” (sing. “mushrik”). This term comes from a three letter Arabic root “sh-r-k” which means “to associate” or “take a partner unto something,” so that the word mushrikun literally means, “those who take a partner [unto God],” that is to say, “polytheists” or “idolaters.” It should be noted, therefore, that the injunction in this verse to fight against the “polytheists” does not pertain to either Jews or Christians from the point of view of Islamic Law. Interestingly, Jews and Christians are never referred to within the Quran by the term mushrikun. They have, in fact, a very different “status” or “title” according to the Quran which, when not addressing them as individual communities, often refers to the two groups together by the technical term, ahl al-kitab or “People of the Book,” meaning people who have been given a book or scripture by God other than the Muslims. Given these facts, it is interesting that this verse should be cited by Bin Ladin in the context of a declaration calling on Muslims to fight Jews and Christians, particularly since this verse says nothing about Jews, Christians or the People of the Book in general. This being the case, the fatwa’s use of 9:5 represents a misappropriation of this verse to an end other than the one intended from its established historical context of fighting the “polytheist” Arabs, who were neither Christians nor Jews.


Given this context, this verse does not, in fact, show Islam to be a “wicked, violent” religion, as Franklin Graham would like us to believe, but shows that Islam gave to Muslims the right to defend themselves against those who would not let them worship God, a right, incidentally, which is protected by the United States Constitution.


We hope that this short analysis may help to demonstrate that the practice today of quoting Quranic verses as justification for sweeping generalizations about the Islamic faith is actually a far more complex matter than may be immediately apparent and requires a deep knowledge of both Quranic commentary and Islamic history. The very least that can be said is that it is a matter more complex than the rhetoric of extremists on all sides of this issue.
